Surrounded by the turquoise waters of the North Aegean and within 6 nautical miles from the mainland is the island of Thassos, known as the “Emerald Island” because of its dense vegetation and lush forest. Beyond the capital, Limenas, the beautiful, picturesque villages and the many scenic beaches, with the most famous and impressive being Aliki, offer peaceful and serene holidays to guests. The climate here is mild and the landscape is Mediterranean and very special, combining images of genuine Greek island and elements of the mainland.
Thassos, the mythical person considered to have given the name to the island, was the son or grandson of the King of Phoenicia. He was found in Thassos while looking for Europe, that was kidnapped by Zeus. His efforts were fruitless and the island became his permanent residence. According to historical data, is. Thassos is known since antiquity for its power and influence throughout the known world. The Athenians, Spartans, Persians and Romans had recognized the island as the “Athens of the North”.
For lovers of exploration and history, Thassos is an important destination. Historical findings are scattered around the island, where the everyday life and history are intertwined. Reportedly, just in Limenas one will find an ancient market and the temples of the Hercules, Dionysus, Artemis and Poseidon.
